In the entire Kathmandu Valley, the capital of Nepal, the most outstanding monuments of cultural heritages like pagoda style temples, waterspouts, palace squares, row houses, squares were compulsorily built with the use of terracotta bricks. The terracotta with high ornamental values such as deep copper color, unique texture, size, shape, form and pattern has made the bricks admirable by tourists and professionals and are being applied in many new constructions with increasing popularity. The exclusivity of terracotta brick is the style of its shape, which allows the construction of the wall façade without exposed mortar joint inside the masonry. With exclusive designs, the terracotta can minimize the use of woodwork and stonework too. Use of these bricks personifies the tradition with its own grace. Terracotta bricks use special mix of variety of highly elastic clay found in Kathmandu Valley. This mix is then molded in contemporary designs of traditional terracotta bricks, manually compacted to specific density and moisture content before it’s fired in special kilns at 900º C for two or three days.
